Examining International Relations In The Realm Of Sports Through History

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Although the precise origins of the connection between sports and international relations remain obscure, all cultures have participated over the course of history in different physical contests that fostered cultural exchange and contributed to their citizens’ political discourse. The ancient Egyptians swam, raced, wrestled, and played games with balls. The ancient Greeks held large athletic festivals, including the Olympic Games that drew athletes’ attention from all over the ancient world. Two of the very first ‘nations’ to engage their athletes in sport competitions, were the Greeks and the Romans. They competed in various athletic events like chariot races, or throwing the javelin, often relying on the participation of animals, or on the use of mechanical contrivances, a tradition continued into modern times in sports such as dog racing, horse racing, and shooting.

During the Middle Ages, the cultural isolation imposed by the feudal system and religious doctrine that opposed the use of the body for play hampered the development of organised sport in the Western world. For many centuries, contests between knights in tournaments that emphasised military skill were among the only forms of approved, public sports. In the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods, games and exercise attained renewed popularity. As had been the case in ancient times, however, politics and social class circumscribed activity. Sports that required wealth or leisure, such as polo or falconry, were the province of the upper classes, affluent nations, while inexpensive, massed sports, such as soccer, took root among commoners and underdeveloped countries.

The late 19th century witnessed an expanding belief in sport as useful recreation and as a mean of interconnectivity between people and nations, while in industrialized societies equipment was standardized, local and national organizations were set up to govern play, and a doctrine of character-building declared sports to be a necessary endeavor for men. The revival of the Olympics in 1896 and the blossoming U.S. intercollegiate athletic system boosted many forms of amateur, or unpaid sports at the same time that professional sports (such as baseball, boxing, and bicycle racing) drew large numbers of spectators. Sports that were traditionally played only in specific countries became by legislative act or general acceptance, national sports, like baseball in the United States, bullfighting in Spain and Mexico, cricket in England, and ice hockey in Canada.

During the 20th century, sports took on an increasingly international flavor aside from the world championships for individual sports, like soccer’s World Cup, large-scale international meets, such as the Pan-American Games and the Commonwealth Games, were inaugurated. Sports have correspondingly become increasingly politicized, as the boycott of the 1980 Moscow games by Western nations has shown, or the retaliatory boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles games by Soviet-bloc nations, an exchange brought on by Soviet actions in Afghanistan.

Despite the difficulties that rose over the past, sport events are considered today a great opportunity for individual countries to promote their cultures, politics and trade. The new terms of globalization and international relations came into the scene of economic evolution and affected sport’s politics, regulations, communication and society as a whole, by using sports mass acceptance as a dominant tool for international negotiations and cultural exchange.

An Overview of Several Irregular Sports

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

When one thinks of sports, it is usually a mainstream activity, such as football or baseball. In reality, there are hundreds of lesser known and alternative sports, some of which stem off from primary ones. Similar sports are grouped into categories. The category of Team Sports comprises most of the familiar sports, from basketball to soccer. However, dozens of other categories exist as well, and each category can hold twenty to thirty individual sports!

Table sports include games like air hockey, billiards, and chess. Many table sports are not played professionally, as certain board games, like Stratego, are considered table sports. All card games, such as Poker, fall under this category as well. Even though all of these activities are in the same category, their level of involvement varies greatly. For example, table tennis requires more energy than Connect Four (which surprisingly is considered a table sport).

Sports in which animals participate are referred to as animal sports, logically. Well known sports, including horse racing and bull fighting, are part of this category. There are several interesting and somewhat humorous sports as well. One in particular, hamster racing, involves placing hamsters in wheels attached to cars and having them race down a short track. People even bet on hamster racing online, although many gamblers do not like to because of the unpredictability of the sport.

You probably never thought a radio could be the subject of a sport, but in amateur radio direction finding, it is. Participants use a compass and special equipment to locate a radio signal transmitter hidden in a forest. Depending on the power of the transmitter, the sport can be quite easy to incredibly difficult.

Remote control sports are ideal for those who enjoy fast-paced action but do not like to move around a lot. The most popular RC Sport is racing, which can be done with cars, boats, or flying craft. Robot fighting is more intensive than racing, as players usually need to build their own robot, which requires a fair amount of technical knowledge, and the willingness to allow something you spent months working on be destroyed in a matter of minutes.

Shooting sports have been popular for decades, and include activities which involve stationary or moving targets. Rifles, shotguns, and occasionally pistols are used in shooting sports; you will rarely find an automatic weapon utilized, mainly because they are illegal for civilians to own in most states. Trap shooting, in which shooters destroy mobile clay pigeons, is even an Olympic event. In fact, at the turn of the twentieth century, live pigeon shooting was a real Olympic game.

Kites are not just for general recreation, for there are a variety of sports which employ them. The most unusual of these sports is kite fighting. Participants attach knives to kites and attempt to break the lines of the other players, and the last man standing is deemed the winner. Other popular kite sports include kiteboarding and snowkiting.

Most people are familiar with competitive typing, but the sport is taken to a more intriguing level with the game of high speed telegraphy. In these competitions, participants are challenged to transmit Morse code signals at high speeds. HST is played worldwide, and international events are organized annually.

Sports Memorabilia Collectible Items

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Every day in the life of a sports fan can be filled with special memories, and special mementos that are rich in history. The mementos might be from a sports event that the entire family has season passes to or might go to a game only once a year. Some special times are represented in some of the special pieces that freeze time in the sports history that is represented by some sports memorabilia collectible items.

There may be a special occasion in your life that you want to recognize with some sentimental sports memorabilia collectible items. Perhaps the memorabilia would be to recognize the first baseball game you ever attended with your Dad, and you wanted to try and locate a collectible, autographed baseball that was signed on that particular day.

Perhaps you might want to purchase some sports memorabilia collectible items to give to your first born son to celebrate the day that he came into your life. The item might be a two signed baseball bats that you crafted into an elegant shadow box to decorate his nursery with. The two bats might be dated with the birth date of the child, and the birth date of the parent that bestowed such a marvelous gift on their baby boy.

Some people try to accumulate all of the sports memorabilia collectible items for one particular sport. The range, on which they can base their collection, can be on the games of hockey, baseball, football, basketball, boxing, soccer, tennis, golf, NASCAR sports.

Some collectors might try to amass a collection that represents simply one item in all sports game categories to create a sports wall in their recreation room. The avid sports collector can create an outstanding conversation piece when autographed jerseys are displayed under glass cases across a wall, with the certificate of authenticity mounted directly underneath in a smaller frame.

These sports item collector’s also might want to pick and choose from among the vast number of autographed sports collectibles that are signed by their favorite players on a significant night in their life, that they could use to ornament their table tops and glassed in cabinets with, such as autograph football helmets of their favorite team, that the collector could use to match the team colors that are spread out all over the billiard room in the home.

There are many sports events that can be recognized through the purchases of sports memorabilia collectible items. If the gridiron antics are your passion, you can have your choice of sports memorabilia collectible items that are from the American Football Conference, the National Football Conference or a very special UDA jersey number collection.

Why Encourage a Child to Play Sports?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Most parents consider putting their child in some after school sport from an early age. Many of them change their minds when they realize how expensive and time-consuming that sport will be for them and their child.

Although some sports can be hard on the wallet, they may be worth the sacrifice. Sports activities do involve considerable time commitment, but there are some reasons why that can be beneficial to your child.

Two of my grandchildren were involved in sports since they were preschoolers. One is a boy and the other is a girl. Both of them started playing soccer as recreation when they were that age. They enjoyed the high physical activity of playing soccer on a regular basis. Neither of them were disciplinary problems at home or at school throughout their school years.

My grandson is the oldest and has a very calm personality. On the soccer field, he was a dynamo player. He developed physically and became very well toned. He was very self disciplined both in his academics and in his sports activities. He was at the top of his class all through school even though he spent a lot of time involved with both soccer practice and games.

His parents never had any trouble getting him to go to bed on time. He was worn out from practicing soccer. He ate a healthy diet to stay in good shape for all the physical energy he put into soccer. Year after year, he continued to play soccer and continued to excel in his classes.

When he graduated from high school, he was well known in his communities both for his reputation in soccer but also for his impeccable character. He went on to college and graduated with an engineering degree. Now he is employed as an engineer and is very happily married to his college sweetheart.

My grand daughter has a totally different personality. Although she is very quiet and unassuming, physically she has always been very hyper. She is in a constant state of motion. When she isn’t practicing dance moves, she is kicking a soccer ball.

Not only has she been involved in soccer from an early age, she also played basketball all through school. Besides her time spent in sports, she was in dance classes and recitals from the age of four until she was in 9th grade.

Even though she has been very busy with all the practices and games, she continued to carry a full academic load. She has continued to have an excellent grade point average all through school. Now that she can drive, her parents are relieved of some of their transporting duties. Most of the time, her parents have taken turns attending her games and recitals, always supporting her efforts.

She has never gotten into trouble at school or with law enforcement. Neither has her brother. Maybe they never got in trouble because they didn’t have time with all their sports commitments. She hasn’t shown any interest in dating either. She said she just doesn’t have time right now. However, she has gone to proms and other special school activities. Her dates for these events have been boys she knows from her sports teams.

When she graduates this summer, she will be attending college with a soccer scholarship. She is very excited about going to college even though she has no career plans yet. She is a very sweet innocent girl, but a dynamo, like her brother, when she is on the field. Even when her team doesn’t win, she is happy because she just loves to play.

My conclusions are that sports involvement is good for children. It teaches them how to work as a team player. Sports activities require self discipline which is good because it helps build a good foundation for their adult lives.

Having something specific to do with their time is beneficial and keeps them from feeling bored. Sports involvement gives them a sense of purpose and belonging. Those children and teens who are active in sports haven’t got time to think about getting into trouble. Doesn’t it sound like it is worth your financial and time investment?
